£35.00

This beautiful textile design originally created in the 1930's illustrates a repeat pattern of dancing Chrysanthemums, The birth flower of November.

The Chinese name for this flower means: 'the essence of the sun', symbolising longevity and health. Chrysanthemums originated in China and were imported into Japan as a medicinal plant.

Chrysanthemum, are called “kiku” in Japanese, they still represent the flower of the monarchy which are referred to as the Chrysanthemum Throne, the 16-petal chrysanthemum is used for the imperial seal. It is thought that the the chrysanthemum became the imperial symbol when the emperor Go-Toba (r. 1183–98) chose the flower as his personal emblem.
